Automation made it possible for one man to run the IT department

Tyrilistiftelsen is an ideal organization that offers treatment and follow up of persons from 16 years and up, suffering from serious drug addictions. Tyrilistiftelsen's IT department consist of one guy – Sven Nordang. With an old Systems Management Server 2003 installation it was getting difficult to drift the department alone, so he contacted Innofactor. We interviewed Sven to hear about the process.
How did you get in contact with Innofactor?
I went to my partner- Snorre Data whom recommended you. Innofactor is a specialist in what they do so that made it a natural choice for me.
Why did you contact Innofactor?
Our system was an old Systems Management Server 2003 installation that needed an upgrade, and we needed assistance in doing so. The old system was set up by someone else earlier and was out of date. It was a couple of challenges with this and that is why I got in contact with Tobias Wold, Senior Consultant at Innofactor. We came up with a plan and Innofactor completed it. The plan was to scratch all and start from the beginning. Since our system was so far behind, this was the best solution.
What challenges appeared during this process?
The completion was well saw through, so there were no challenges. We don't have an advanced setup, only around 200 users. I am the only one in the IT department, so this tool is crucial to me.
What solutions were implemented?
Configuration Manager 2012 R2 was implemented and the associated setups around it. We have 10 locations in Norway with some distribution points, so this was necessary. It was a relatively "normal" setup as we don't have too many special applications. My wish was to integrate WSUS in Configuration Manager so that I didn't have to relate to WSUS, and the consultant made this a reality.
What solutions solved what problem?
Deploying of machines was the problem that was solved. We have 10 different locations that needs drifting with different number of computers. It was too time consuming for me alone in IT without any automized installation routines.
What is the result of the project?
We got it exactly how we wanted it. The consultant solved the unsolved tasks and has now upgraded the system again to the newest version of Configuration Manager. He installed everything so we are now ready for Windows 10, which was a huge part of the agenda- to keep upgrading.
What value has this added to the organization?
It resulted in release of my time. It was also a security so that we could re-deploy the computers in case something would happen. We now have everything in one interface in relations to patching - which now works. This is a huge strength. We rarely used deploying before because it in general wasn't working.
